Bioengineering and Environmental Sciences


The Bioengineering & Environmental Sciences Department at IICT has a multidisciplinary team of experienced Scientists with expertise in - chemical, microbial, environmental and analytical chemistry. The Division has comprehensive technical competence and project management skills for technology development and basic research work in Bioengineering and Environmental Sciences (BEES). The Centre is equipped with state of art infrastructure in this area. Several Processes are developed in BEES Division for commercial exploitation in the field of Energy and Environment.Biohydrogen technology being developed in BEES can be easily transferred to the existing effluent treatment plants which can reduce the investment cost by the conversion of negative valued waste in to commercially viable hydrogen. Besides bio-H2, various other wastes to wealth technologies like the production of biodiesel through micro algal cultivation and synthesis of industrially important chemicals and products through biological routes are being developed. Reducing the process economics by integrating various process for developing a waste biorefinery, which advocates for circular economy, is another explore in BEES.

Pilot scale biofilter was developed for the removal of odor containing compounds from industrial emissions and a commercial scale plant of 13.5 m3 was installed at M/s SAA Tannery at Erode to remove the odor causing ammonia and hydrogen sulfide from preliminary tanning process of the tannery. An innovative high rate biomethanation digester called Self Mixed Anaerobic Digester (SMAD) was also developed for the treatment of organic solid waste and demonstrated at Live Stock Research Station (LRS) of Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University, Hyderabad. An improved version of SMAD known as anaerobic gas lift reaction (AGR) was developed and the technology was transferred to m/s Ahuja Engineering Services (AES) private limited, Hyderabad. M/s AES installed two plants (one tone per day) for the treatment and concomitant generation of biogas and biomanome from poultry- litter(Toofran,Telangana) and Food waste(Bellay, Karnataka).

A modular digester is designed based on scientific doctrine of environmental biotechnology coupled with advanced engineering principles to accomplish superior process efficiency for safe discharge of garbage and this technology is field tested and currently these digesters are working at two housing colonies having nearly 100 families each. A microbial process for the production of L-asparaginase through solid state fermentation was also developed. Emission control is a major issue with respect to climate change and BEES Division carried out exemplary work in association with TIFR for mapping various pollutants in atmosphere. Non-Cellulosic biopolymer production by biotechnologies route and its chemical modification to enhance are bioavailability and pharmatherompatic value was developed
